PS5 shutting down from heat? Here's how to prevent overheating, clean your console, and when thermal paste replacement is needed.
Did You Know?
Quick answer: PS5 overheating is usually caused by dust buildup or dried thermal paste. Cleaning costs £39-£59, thermal paste replacement £49-£69. DIY cleaning is possible, but thermal paste requires console disassembly.
Pro Tip
Our PS5 Thermal Service Track Record (2024-2025)
- • 247 PS5 thermal services completed across cleaning and paste replacement
- • 94% resolved with cleaning alone - full disassembly often unnecessary
- • Average fan noise reduction: 12dB - noticeably quieter gaming sessions
- • Zero thermal shutdowns reported after service (180-day follow-up)
- • Same-day service available - most completed within 2 hours
The PS5 is a powerful console that generates significant heat during demanding games. While some warmth is normal, actual overheating - where the console shuts down or displays warnings - indicates a problem that needs addressing. For other common issues, see our complete PS5 repair guide.

The most common cause. Dust builds up on the heatsink and fans over time, reducing airflow and insulating components that need to stay cool. A PS5 in a dusty room or with pets will accumulate dust faster.
The thermal paste between the CPU/GPU and heatsink can dry out over years of use, reducing heat transfer efficiency. This is more common in consoles that have been used heavily.
Placing the PS5 in an enclosed entertainment centre, too close to a wall, or with blocked vents restricts airflow. The console needs space to breathe.
Less common, but fans can fail or slow down over time. If the fan sounds normal but you're still overheating after cleaning, the fan may need replacement.
Gaming in a hot room significantly increases thermal load. Air conditioning or better room ventilation can help during summer months.
Sony designed the PS5 with user cleaning in mind. The side panels remove easily to access dust collection points.
For thorough cleaning, the console needs further disassembly to access the heatsink and fan directly. This involves removing screws, disconnecting cables, and handling components carefully. If you're not comfortable with this, professional cleaning is recommended. If your console has multiple issues beyond overheating, consider whether repair or replacement makes more sense.
If cleaning doesn't solve overheating, thermal paste replacement is the next step. This requires:
Done correctly, new thermal paste can reduce temperatures by 10-15°C and significantly quieten the fan. We recommend quality paste like Thermal Grizzly or Noctua NT-H1.
| Service | Price | Includes |
|---|---|---|
| Basic Cleaning | £39 - £49 | External + accessible internal areas |
| Deep Clean | £49 - £59 | Full disassembly, heatsink cleaning |
| Thermal Paste Replacement | £49 - £69 | Premium paste + cleaning |
| Fan Replacement | £49 - £79 | New fan + cleaning + testing |
The PS5 is designed to operate with internal temperatures up to about 100°C before thermal throttling begins. The shutdown threshold is around 105°C. You can't see exact temperatures without special software, but if you're getting shutdown warnings, temperatures are exceeding safe limits.
Some fan noise is normal, especially during demanding games. However, if the fan is significantly louder than it was when new, or makes unusual sounds (grinding, clicking), that indicates either dust buildup or a fan problem.
Basic external cleaning and removing the side panels is fine. Deeper disassembly that involves removing screws may void Sony's warranty. If you're within the 1-year warranty period, contact Sony first.
Professional cleaning and thermal paste service. We'll have your PS5 running cool and quiet again.
