MacBook Pro screen going dark at the bottom? Learn about Flexgate - the design flaw affecting 2016-2018 models, and how to fix it.
Did You Know?
Quick Summary: Flexgate affects 2016-2018 MacBook Pro models due to a too-short display flex cable. Repair costs £149-449 depending on whether you need cable replacement or full display replacement. Apple's repair program ended in 2022. celltech offers Flexgate repair with 27-month warranty across the UK.
We've been repairing Macs since May 1999 - that's 27 years of experience with Apple hardware. After 24 years running our own shop in Kings Heath, Birmingham, we've now partnered with Byte at Dovehouse Parade in Solihull to offer expert Mac repairs in-store and UK-wide via mail-in.
If your MacBook Pro screen has started showing a strange glow at the bottom, or the backlight has failed entirely whilst the display still technically works, you're likely dealing with "Flexgate" - one of the most common and frustrating design flaws in Apple's recent laptop history.
We've repaired hundreds of Flexgate-affected MacBooks. This guide covers everything: what causes it, which models are affected, your repair options, and honest advice about when repair makes sense versus when it doesn't.
Flexgate is a community-coined term for a design flaw affecting certain MacBook Pro models. The issue stems from the display flex cable - the ribbon that connects the screen to the logic board - being too short.
Every time you open and close your MacBook, this cable flexes. In affected models, the cable wraps around the display hinge in a way that puts stress on it each time you adjust the screen angle. Over months and years of normal use, this repeated flexing causes the cable to wear and eventually fail.
Warning
The honest truth: This isn't user error or misuse. It's a design flaw. Apple never officially admitted this, but their extended repair program and the fact that later models use a longer cable says everything.
The backlight circuit within the flex cable is particularly vulnerable. When it fails, your screen loses its backlight - the display panel still works, but without illumination behind it, you can only see content under very bright light.
Flexgate primarily affects 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro 13-inch and 15-inch modelswith Touch Bar. Some 2018 models are also affected, though Apple quietly lengthened the cable partway through 2018 production.
| Model | Model Identifier | Risk Level |
|---|---|---|
| MacBook Pro 13" 2016 | A1706, A1708 | High |
| MacBook Pro 15" 2016 | A1707 | High |
| MacBook Pro 13" 2017 | A1706, A1708 | High |
| MacBook Pro 15" 2017 | A1707 | High |
| MacBook Pro 13" 2018 (early) | A1989 | Medium |
| MacBook Pro 15" 2018 (early) | A1990 | Medium |
| 2019 and newer | Various | Low/Fixed |
Pro Tip
How to check your model: Click the Apple menu → About This Mac. Your model year and identifier are shown there. Alternatively, look at the text on the bottom of your MacBook near the regulatory markings.
Flexgate typically progresses through distinct stages:
The earliest symptom is a bright, uneven glow at the bottom of the screen - some describe it as looking like stage footlights. This appears because the backlight LEDs at the bottom of the display are starting to lose consistent connection. At this stage, the screen is still usable, just with an annoying bright strip.
The backlight may start cutting out at certain screen angles. You might find a "sweet spot" where tilting the screen to a specific angle keeps the backlight on. This is a clear sign the flex cable is damaged but not completely failed.
Eventually, the backlight fails entirely. The screen still works - shine a torch on it and you can see your desktop - but it's completely unusable for normal work. Many people at this stage think their screen is "dead", but only the backlight has failed.
Did You Know?
Quick test: If your screen appears black but you can see a faint image under bright light (or when shining a torch on it), the panel is working fine - it's the backlight that's failed. This is classic Flexgate.
Apple's 2016 MacBook Pro redesign made the machines thinner than ever. To achieve this, they integrated the display flex cable into the display assembly in a way that left very little slack.
The cable passes around the hinge mechanism. Every time you open or close the lid, the cable flexes. With older MacBook designs, there was enough cable length to accommodate this movement. In the 2016-2018 design, there wasn't.
The result: repeated stress on the same point of the cable, eventually causing the thin copper traces inside to crack. Once enough traces break, the backlight circuit fails.
Warning
Apple's response: In 2019, Apple launched a free repair program for affected 2016 MacBook Pro models, covering displays showing Flexgate symptoms for 4 years from original purchase. This program quietly ended in 2022. Apple never extended it to 2017 models, despite identical issues.
There are two main repair approaches for Flexgate. As specialists in Mac board-level repair, we can offer both options:
A skilled technician can replace just the damaged flex cable, preserving your original display panel. This requires micro-soldering skills - the same expertise we use for MacBook Pro logic board repair. It's the more economical option and results in a fully functioning screen.
Pros: Lower cost, same original display quality
Cons: Requires micro-soldering skills, not all shops can do it properly
This replaces the entire display unit - screen panel, backlight, and flex cable all in one assembly. It's the approach Apple uses (and charges significantly more for).
Pros: Comprehensive fix, easier repair process
Cons: Higher cost
Here's what we charge in January 2026:
| Repair Option | celltech Price | Apple Price | Turnaround |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flex cable replacement | £149 - £199 | Not offered | 2-4 hours |
| Full display assembly | £299 - £449 | £549 - £729 | Same day |
We'll be honest: Flexgate is not a DIY repair for most people.
Flex cable replacement requires micro-soldering skills and specialized equipment. The cable connector is tiny, and damaging it during removal/installation can turn a £150 repair into needing a new logic board.
Full display replacement is technically within reach of experienced DIYers, but requires careful handling of fragile display connectors and proper reassembly of numerous small components. One wrong move with the display cables can crack the LCD.
Pro Tip
Our honest advice: If you're comfortable with iFixit guides and have repaired laptops before, display replacement is achievable. If this would be your first laptop repair, the risk of causing additional damage outweighs the cost savings.
We assess each Flexgate case individually and recommend the most cost-effective approach for your situation:

Pro Tip
Not sure what's wrong? Flexgate symptoms can sometimes overlap with other display issues. We offer free diagnosis - if it turns out to be something else entirely, we'll let you know before any work begins.
If you have an affected model that hasn't developed Flexgate yet, you can reduce (but not eliminate) the risk:
Warning
Reality check: These tips may delay Flexgate, but if your MacBook has been used normally for several years, the damage may already be done. The cable accumulates wear over time. Prevention helps most with newer-to-you affected models.
